During pregnancy and throughout lactation, the breasts undergo a series of changes. Increasing the size of the breasts is one of the most obvious changes, but this brings with it the appearance of stretch marks, sagging of the breasts or back pain. Likewise, breastfeeding complications such as mastitis or cracks in the nipple cause extra suffering to the breast.
From the moment the baby is born, the mother devotes all her attention to all the care that the newborn needs, largely forgetting to spend a small part of the day taking care of herself. If during pregnancy you put all the remedies to prevent stretch marks on your chest and abdomen, now is not the time to give up. A few small rituals can help you take care of the breast throughout breastfeeding:
-Nursing bras: To avoid sagging breasts, you can wear an appropriate bra for breastfeeding. Nursing bras usually meet the appropriate requirements for breast care and the comfort of the mother to breastfeed the baby thanks to the removable parts in the breast area. If you do not want or cannot afford a nursing bra, choose one adapted to your new contour, that does not oppress you, preferably made of cotton, does not have underwires and wide straps. It is convenient for you to use it day and night.
-Breast creams: the breast must be well hydrated. Just take a shower a day and do not overdo it by washing your breasts several times throughout the day to avoid drying them out. To take care of the breast and avoid the appearance of stretch marks, apply a moisturizing cream daily. If you also have cracks or a sore nipple, you can use lanolin creams only in the nipple area.
-Breast pads: If you use protective discs, change them frequently as, being wet, they tend to soften and damage the skin of the nipple.
-Breastmilk: It is the best protector for damaged nipples. If you have very sensitive nipples, especially at the beginning of breastfeeding or you have even cracked. Apply a little milk at the end of the feeding and let it air dry, it is the best natural healing and will help you to hold the breast during lactation.
-Baby position: a correct position of the baby is the best aid to take care of the breast during lactation since it will avoid complications such as mastitis and cracks in the nipple.
-Gymnastics for the chest: there is a very simple exercise that you can practice after feedings to take care of your breasts while breastfeeding. Use a small ball, put it at chest level, and squeeze it with both hands. You can do a few sets after feeds to strengthen your chest muscles. You can also extend your arms and perform circular movements, in and out.
If you acquire these simple habits to take care of your breast during breastfeeding, you will avoid that when this period ends, the breasts will sag and the dreaded stretch marks have appeared.
