We know more and more about autism, a permanent developmental disorder that manifests itself in the first three years of a child's age. These are studies that have contributed to dismantling myths or misinformation that circulate in society.

1. The intelligence of the autistic child. Among the urban legends that circulate about autism, the most widespread is the widespread belief that people with autism have normalized or even higher than average intelligence, but studies on the IQ of people with autism show the opposite: 75 percent of people with autism have an intellectual disability associated with this disorder.

2. Lack of maternal affection? Another of the myths that show that autism was a very unknown disorder for the general population is that for years it was thought that the cause of autism was the lack of maternal affection. However, in the same way, the investigations carried out have shown that in this sense there is nothing further from the truth.

Maternal affection does not influence the triggering of this disorder in children, since it is now known that autism is due almost 90 percent to hereditary causes. Its origin is due to an abnormality in neuronal connections that is attributable, frequently, to genetic mutations.

At World Autism DaySome organizations, such as the Spanish Confederation of Organizations in Favor of People with Intellectual Disabilities (FEAPS), claim to end stereotypes that damage the social image of people with this disorder. For this reason, organizations want more than ever to inform society so that support is offered to autistic people, who are capable of communicating, albeit in a different way.

And is that autism is a profound, permanent developmental disorder. It affects communication, imagination, planning and emotional reciprocity. The symptoms, in general, are the incapacity for social interaction, isolation and stereotypes (uncontrolled movements of some limb, generally of the hands).

To improve their situation, children with autism canuse alternative communication, gestural or image sharing systems that help in communication. Knowing in advance the tasks they are going to do or the food they are going to eat helps them establish a fixed routine that gives them a lot of security.
