At Guiainfantil we teach you to create a fun step by step Homemade model of the digestive system that children can play with and play while learning the names of the different organs of the human body. Through this educational resource, children will strengthen their knowledge in the most fun and enjoyable way.
To do this, we are going to turn a basic t-shirt into an original model of the digestive system! you sign up? It is easier than it may seem, and we are going to offer you alternatives so that you can carry out this project with the materials you have at home.
- A T-shirt
- Paper or cardstock
- Colored felt or eva rubber
- Thread and needle or silicone gun
- Marker pen
- Velcro and cotton
Let's see the step by step. Follow it calmly (and with fun) and the result of your project will be spectacular. To get started with this craft, spread the shirt out on the worktable. Take a good look at its dimensions, because it will be the base on which the pieces that we will manufacture later will be glued. These pieces will represent the main organs of the digestive system, ready?
1. To make the parts of our digestive system, that is, the stomach, pancreas, liver, small intestine and large intestine, you candraw them on paper or cardboard freehand and make your own template. After drawing it, you have to cut it out.
2. Once you have drawn and cut out the templates, you will have to pass them twice to felt or rubber. We have opted for felt and we have used a color for each organ, in this way you will get two templates of the same color for each piece, how colorful!
3. Now the goal is join the two pieces of the same color each. To do this, you can use different techniques.
If your insoles are made of rubber, the fastest and most advisable thing is the hot silicone gun, but if you have opted for felt like us, you can use both the silicone gun and the thread and the needle.
To glue both pieces with silicone, it is necessary that you spread the product along the edges taking care that no one burns. It may be best to have an adult handle or supervise this step. If you prefer to use a needle and thread, we recommend using the scallop stitch, which is a basic stitch for this type of craft, simple and attractive!
By the way! Before completely joining the 2 pieces together, you have the possibility to fill them with a little cotton, especially if you have used felt or any other fabric. Do you already have them?
4. Let's do a drum roll because we are about to finish! We only need to assemble the pieces on the shirt, for this we will use the velcro. There are many types of velcro: Adhesive, to sew, to stick it with the iron ... As it is a T-shirt, the easiest to use is the velcro to stick with the iron.
Glue several strips in a row vertically on the shirt, so that they cover the central and lower area. Then stick the corresponding strip on each piece (or organ) horizontally.
5. Before starting to play and mounting the model on the shirt, you can decorate it as you like. What do you think of the idea of drawing and painting with a textile marker? Maybe you can add the digestive tract, draw fruits, vegetables ... actually you can add everything you can think of. It has been great!
6. You can now put the organs in place. Do you remember the correct order? And the name of all of them?

So that your children can benefit from creative learning, we propose a game in pairs based on this model of the digestive system. Let's see the rules and procedure:
- It's necessary that players wear their jerseys with the model removed; the pieces will be placed within reach, on a chair or table. As it is a blind model, since the pieces do not have any written words, they will learn to differentiate them by memorizing their names. The colors will help you in this process.
- To start the game, you need a person to act as a moderator, and also to go naming the different organs: stomach, pancreas, liver, small intestine and large intestine.
- Each time an organ is named, the children will have to take the corresponding pieces to assemble the model correctly on their partner's shirt. If there are several pairs, the one that finishes first will win.
As you progress, you can create more pieces to add the internal parts of each organ, or simply add questions at the end of the game, such as: What is the name of the small viscus found in the liver? or can you name the 3 parts the small intestine divides into?
It will be a lot of fun and children can play as many times as they want! To wash the shirt you just have to take off the pieces and put it in the washing machine, it is the magic of velcro!

In order for the nutrients in the food we eat to reach all the cells of our body, they need to be transformed into simple molecules, so let's jog our memories to remember the process!
- The organs of the digestive system and their function
- Mouth: It is the cavity where we have our teeth (responsible for cutting and grinding food), the tongue and the salivary glands. In this first phase, food becomes the bolus.
- Pharynx: When swallowing, the food bolus passes through the pharynx. It is a tube that connects the mouth with the esophagus. It also connects the nose with the trachea. The pharynx is also part of the respiratory system.
- Esophagus: This tube begins in the neck and passes through the thorax until it reaches the abdomen, that is, it communicates the pharynx with the stomach.
- Stomach: This is the place where the bolus is stored. It is responsible for secreting gastric juices to convert the food bolus into a semi-liquid substance, thus allowing it to travel to the small intestine.
- Pancreas: It is in charge of secreting the pancreatic juice. This substance is very important for the digestion process to continue correctly. It also generates insulin, which helps control the metabolism of sugars.
- Liver: It is an attached gland. It is responsible for secreting bile, which is necessary for the digestion process and the absorption of fats. Did you know that the liver is the largest organ in our body? It can weigh approximately 1.5 kg! In the liver we also find the gallbladder, which is a smaller viscus whose function is to store the bile that the liver has produced until it is required in the digestion process. Wow!
- Small intestine: It is the part of the digestive tract that follows the stomach. It is about 6 meters long, so it is folded over on itself. It is responsible for absorbing the nutrients from the food that we have digested and is divided into 3 parts: duodenum, jejunum and ileum.
- Large intestine: It is divided into 4 parts: cecum (which is the first part of the large intestine), colon, rectum (which is the final part) and anus. Thus we excrete the substances that we do not need.
